The release of Petrosys version 17 brought many upgrades and new functionality. One of the most noticeable improvements is the enhanced map Display List (many users will think of this as the Display/Modify… window). I’m going to give a quick walk through of all the cool new improvements that will speed up your mapping workflows.

Map Layer Grouping

A whole new level of organization has been added to Petrosys mapping. The ability to sort your layers into groups makes it even easier to gather knowledge from your presentation quality maps. You can sort multiple geologic structures and easily turn them on/off by grouping contours, faults and grids together. Group all of your culture data so you can easily move lease blocks, pipelines and shipping routes to the forefront or hide them all when you want to really concentrate on the geology.

To create a group go to the menu option Layers/Create Group, or right-click in the display list and choose Create Group. You can rename the group by selecting the folder in the display list and right-clicking. Now you can add layers to the group by simply dragging and dropping them into the new group. The entire group will now act as a layer, move the whole group up or down, or hide the entire group by un-checking the box to the left of the folder icon.

If want to quickly group layers automatically, Petrosys can do that too! Just use the Groupingdrop-down menu at the top of the Display List to dynamically group all layers by Layer type,Data source or CRS. This comes in very handy if you need to quickly turn off all the grid layers you have displayed, you need to see how many polygons files you are using to define your reservoir or if you need to make sure all the coordinate system data provided by your data vendor is valid.

Docking and Layer Details

Grouping is a major change but that’s not the only upgrade you’ll notice to the map display list. If you want to go back to the classic Petrosys display list window simply undock the list from your map. Use your cursor to drag the Display List (click and drag the title bar) off the map and then resize to your liking.

There are also a few visual changes that make the list more user-friendly and intuitive. There are no more columns of data associated to each layer. Now if you want to see more layer content just expand the arrow symbol next to each layer. Once the layer content has been ‘opened’ you can turn on/off pickability (ability to interact with the layer on the map).
