I have some culture data and raster images that will be used for a number of my maps. Can I create a single map of my most commonly displayed data, and then display this as one layer?

In Petrosys you have the ability to create mapfiles that contain standard display items, and then save them for use as a simple display item for all your current maps. You can even take this a step further by creating your “base” map around ANY items that are constantly displayed on your maps, which can then be used as a backdrop for the rest of your displayed data. For example, you might want to display the same underlying raster image or landsat photo, plus culture data based on roads, rivers, creeks and license permits. So you create a mapfile based on the display of these items, and then use this “base” map as a first display item on all your time/depth or contour maps. To achieve this, display the newly created “base” map using theDisplay/Map File (.dbm) option.

Another exciting feature in version 17, is that you can go to the Display List option and expand this layer, and then turn on/off any individual components of the combined map that are not required.

For example, the map below shows a single displayed “base” map that contains 4 layers of culture data, and this layer has been expanded in the Display List window so that you can see the tick boxes for each individual item.
