Unlocking data integration across the energy landscape

In the fast-paced and constantly changing energy landscape, data integration is a persistent challenge. With many specialist applications handling geoscience and geophysical data in different ways, smooth data exchange remains a complex hurdle. Enter Petrosys Exchange—a powerful tool designed to simplify data movement between industry-standard applications.

Kevin Ward, Petrosys Exchange Product Champion explains more about this innovative solution.

What is Petrosys Exchange?

The oil and gas industry relies on numerous specialist applications, each with its own data management approach – whether it’s geoscience data like wells and well logs or geophysical data like seismic. Even when industry standards exist—such as SEGY for seismic data—variations can create roadblocks to efficient data exchange.

With many companies using multiple tools rather than a single all-in-one solution, this can lead to major challenges in transferring data between them. And, while initiatives like OSDU™ Data Platform aim to standardize data access across platforms –  a great long-term goal – they are not yet widely implemented.

This is where Petrosys Exchange makes a difference. Already in use Exchange has kept data flowing smoothly between different applications for several years. A geologist working with data from applications such as OpenWorks, Petrel, Kingdom, DUG Insight, or PaleoScan,  can use Exchange to sync the data between these apps. By automating these transfers, Exchange reduces errors, minimizes manual effort, and ensures data consistency.

Looking ahead, Exchange is fully prepared to integrate with OSDU™ Data Platform through its OSDU™ connector, making it a valuable data management tool both today and in the future.

If we’re not using OSDU yet, is Exchange still useful?

Absolutely! Exchange is built to streamline data movement between applications, even in environments that haven’t adopted OSDU.

Lots of companies face complex workflows with multiple manual processes to move well data, SEGY files, and other critical information between platforms. Exchange eliminates these inefficiencies by automating data transfers through a single, scheduled process, reducing manual effort and minimizing errors. This ensures smooth and repeatable workflows without the need for costly custom integrations.

Is Exchange a brand-new product?

Yes and no! While Exchange is being launched as a standalone product with a fresh interface and expanded capabilities, its core technology has been part of Petrosys PRO for years.

A powerful mapping tool, Petrosys PRO gradually evolved to include data exchange capabilities. As customers increasingly relied on Exchange functionality for their data movement, it became clear that it deserved its own dedicated platform.

By separating Exchange from PRO, we can now invest more in its development, making it an even more powerful solution for seamless data integration.

How do you see Exchange evolving in the next 12–24 months?

The demand for Exchange is growing from two key areas:

  • Software vendors want to embed Exchange into their applications, allowing them to focus on their core functionalities instead of building proprietary data connectors.
  • Oil & gas companies are looking for alternatives to other industry applications that are reaching end-of-life. Exchange is emerging as a strong replacement, particularly for seismic volume exchange.

In the next year, we expect to deliver:

  • A fully functional standalone Exchange product.
  • Enhanced Seismic volume exchange capabilities.
  • Embedded Exchange tools in third-party applications.

Beyond that, the Petrosys Exchange development roadmap will be shaped by customer needs and industry trends.

How will the development of a separate Exchange tool affect existing Petrosys PRO users?

Petrosys | Interica is fully committed to our long-time Petrosys PRO customers.

There are no plans to remove existing features and charge separately for them. Instead, licensing models will ensure PRO users retain their current functionality.

New features, such as seismic volume exchange, may be offered as an add-on module or a separate license. However, all PRO users will continue to benefit from their existing capabilities under their current agreements.

How does Exchange fit into the broader Petrosys | Interica suite?

Right now, Exchange integrates with dbMap, a corporate master data store that allows users to pull high-quality corporate data into applications like Petrel with ease.

Looking ahead, there is significant potential for integration with Interica OneView (IOV). IOV helps companies discover, catalogue, and archive data. Future integration with Exchange could allow users to transfer discovered datasets into active workflows effortlessly, making data access more efficient and actionable.

When will the standalone  Petrosys Exchange be released?

The standalone version is in its early stages. A pre-release version is however available for customer testing, with a full production-ready release expected later this year.

Petrosys | Interica is taking a flexible approach – if early testers require refinements, the team will take the time to perfect the product. If feedback is positive and companies are ready to adopt, the release will move forward as planned. Our aim is to be agile with development and driven by real-world input from users.

Can customers use Petrosys Exchange as a standalone product today?

Yes! Exchange is available both within Petrosys PRO and as a pre-release standalone application. Customers can rent, subscribe, or purchase it outright.

A detailed Exchange matrix on the Petrosys website outlines all current connections and workflows. While the new Exchange interface is not yet commercially available, it is open for testing—Petrosys welcomes feedback from early adopters.

How can customers access the pre-release version?

The pre-release version of Petrosys Exchange will be available through the next Petrosys PRO release, Petrosys PRO 2025.1.

Customers can install this version and access Exchange directly from the menu. Currently, Exchange still relies on Petrosys PRO for installation, but upcoming updates will introduce a standalone installer, launcher, and licensing system.
