Denoising seismic records

In seismic processing, data recorded in, land or marine environments will be contaminated with noise, which is really just the undesirable part of the seismic record which does not conform to our conceptual model of the seismic wavefield.

As noise is a challenge for all seismic datasets the Claritas team successfully invested in the research and development of an AI based method for attenuating noise in both Land and Marine seismic datasets.

Over the last couple of releases of Claritas, our R&D Geophysicist Mark Henderson has been delving into the world of AI, in particular, Tensor Factorisation and low-rank tensors to develop an effective denoising solution. The new DENOISE_TF module attempts to find structure in the input shot and receiver gathers and assumes that this structure is the desired signal, the remainder is considered noise. The application models the structured portion of the data using a low-rank tensor and through a tolerance parameter the rank of the tensor can be indirectly set by the user.

Example Land Shots

Example Marine Data

Stacked sections: left – no DENOISE_TF, right – with DENOISE_TF shows the general reduction in dipping noise and improved continuity of the signal. The highlighted region corresponds to zoomed displays below.

DENOISE_TF

Zoomed sections: left – no DENOISE_TF, right – with DENOISE_TF shows the general reduction in dipping noise and improved continuity of the signal.

The stack displays from the marine dataset show a general improvement and reduction in random noise on the entire stack and the zoomed area highlights improved resolution on the deeper structure with the removal of random and steeply dipping coherent noise.
