You already appreciate the attractiveness, accuracy and completeness of your Petrosys maps, but do you know how to make it easy for new users to produce consistent looking maps?

Using templates helps new users produce attractive and consistent maps quickly. It also makes map output easy to compare and is a great way to promote a strong company identity.

The Petrosys “local” directory is used to store company-specific files and is traditionally used for storing custom well symbols, custom coordinate reference systems, etc. Many companies are unaware that they can also store additional symbology types like extra scale bars and colour gradients, making them available to all users company-wide.

Aside from the “local” directory, an individual or company can set up “bookmarks” within Petrosys to give them one-click access to favourite folders in their file structure. This is ideal if a company chooses to set up a folder with template projects or mapsheets. Bookmarks can be set up in the Configuration panel under Path Mapping.

Petrosys already provides a range of template projects with pre-defined areas of interest for each country in the world. Expert users can also set up specific template projects with both areas of interest and maps (data and symbology) relevant to their asset team. Other users can then merge these dbm files into their own projects preserving consistent display styles that match corporate mapping standards.

New Petrosys users will often create a project and display data without setting up a traditional mapsheet. This is a great way to quickly assess data and a useful working canvas. It is now very easy to save their view as a presentation quality map by saving the dynamic view with a corporate mapsheet template. In the example below, templates have been set up for Powerpoints and Hardcopy at a variety of scales, each giving suitable coordinate annotation increments, scalebars etc.

The beauty of this option is that it only preserves the style of the template mapsheet – the coordinate range and coordinate reference system is taken from the dynamic mapsheet. A few mouse clicks is all it takes to turn the data view into a presentation quality map.
