Synopsis:
Introduction to Petrosys is designed as a 1 day introduction for the new user. It covers Petrosys projects, coordinate reference systems, map sheets, displaying Petrosys data as well as connecting to other data sources like OpenWorks, GeoFrame, SMT, ArcSDE etc. It also includes an introduction to gridding and contouring, using and editing color gradients and producing presentation quality maps.

Who should attend:
This course is directed at the active geoscientist, engineer or technical assistant who needs to produce maps and integrate spatial, raster and surface information from workstations and other sources, but who has not yet had exposure to Petrosys mapping.

Previous Petrosys Courses Required:
None

Length of Course:
1 Day - Introduction to Petrosys can be expanded to 2 days by combining it with Building on Basics. The combined course is called Petrosys Overview.

Course Content:

The 1 day overview course covers the following topics:

  1. Coordinate reference systems - what you need to know to avoid costly mistakes.
  2. Petrosys concepts - how Petrosys is structured, creating projects and the basic concepts needed to use the software effectively.
  3. Map sheets - what map sheets are and how to create them.
  4. Displaying data and display lists - displaying seismic, spatial data (including using thematic mapping), wells and faults (displaying grids and contours is covered in the Mapping with grids module below).
  5. Improving your map - Georeferencing images, correcting over-posted text, adding scale bars, legends and title blocks.
  6. Overview of Gridding and Contouring - creation of a grid from one or more data sources and defining the appropriate parameters; computing contours.
  7. Mapping with grids - displaying grids and contours on your map; choosing appropriate color gradients or making your own, displaying color bars and finalising your map for presentation purposes.
